Language (ランゲージ,Rangēji?) is the Concept-Type UMA that embodies the concept of language.[1] She is also known as the "Eighth Master Rule UMA". She is the main antagonist of the Language Arc.
Language resembles a girl with dark braided hair, and circular eyebrows. She wears glasses and a crown resembling the Tower of Babel broken on the front. She's seen holding a very large book that she keeps open with both of her hands.
Despite her child-like appearance, when Language shows blood thirst, her teeth become fangs much like her fellow peer Beast.
In her Third Phase, she grows into a more adult form, and loses her glasses. Her crown also grows taller and without the broken part of it.
Personality[]
Language seems to love reading given that she is always seen with a book in hand. She is shown to hate humans, as she is seen using one as a makeshift chair, showing that she only sees them as objects to be used. She has a tendency to refer to herself as Lan.
Language is shown to carry a deeply personal vendetta against Nico Vorgeil for one-sidedly defeating her, to the extent that he was the one person Language refuses to forget about for over the 4,6 billion years of the 101st loop, all in the hopes of facing him again to redeem herself of that indignity. She also wasn't afraid to threaten Fuuko into collapsing civilization if she didn't give Nico a seat to have her revenge against him.
Language's sadistic side
When learning that Nico has not awakened Unforgettable, she became extremely irritated as her long sought vengeance would be rendered meaningless if he was powerless, engaging in much more aggressive tactics all as a means to force Nico to reclaim his negator powers to have her revenge.
She is shown to be easily annoyed when not getting things her as she was angry at Ichico for not dying after her attack and allowing Nico to gain his ability so she could have her rematch. However, she will show respect for her opponents when they demonstrate their resourcefulness and intelligence.
Plot[]
Like all other UMAs, Language was created by God at the beginning of the loops, when he began adding rules to the newly created world to test humans. According to Time, her addition smoothed out all the previous changes (Death, Change, Luck, Justice, War, Time himself and Beast) and hastened growth and degeneration.
Apocalypse made the neutralization of UMA Language a quest, allowing one participant and offered the unification of all world languages as a reward for completion.[1]
Language is defeated by Nico in the 100th loop
Nico Vorgeil participated in the quest and managed to successfully neutralize Language. Nico defeated her without difficulty, and even Language herself was surprised that a Negator other than Juiz had defeated her. Although Nico asked her how she knew Juiz, Language didn't answer, disappearing after a veiled threat to see each other again.[2] As a reward for the quest, Apocalypse alters the memories and culture of all non-negators and all languages are modified to be English.[3]
She and another Master Rule, Beast, are one of the targets the Union must negate or the Revolution penalty is added. Because of this, Fuuko decides to recruit Juiz's reincarnation to use Unjustice against the Master Rules.
During the process for the next quest, Apocalypse and God try to have all of the Master Rules appear due to the penalties racked up by the Union. However, Andy appears and fights them back, only allowing Beast and Language to escape because he trusts the Union would be able to defeat them.
Language is sent by Soul to attack the Union, specifically to kill Ichico Nemuri, as her negator powers have granted her a greater understanding of the concept of the soul, a key component to allowing Negators to gain a greater understanding of their negator abilities. As an added layer of security, Language negates Fuuko's group the ability to speak, preventing her from communicating her discovery to others.
Faced with Nico and Ichico during her assault, Language is excited to face Nico again, who she was seeking revenge on after being defeated by him in the previous loop. However, realizing that Nico has not yet become a Negator, Language targets Ichico, so that her death will cause the tragedy that will awaken Nico's powers. Ichico survives by taking advantage of her astral projection, and, after forcing Fuuko to give up 12th and 13th place to Nico and Ichico with the threat of causing the collapse of society, Language officially begins the quest to neutralize her.
Language forces Nico and Ichico to play Deadly Rule Shiritori, and, after explaining the rules to them, Language and Nico begin to fight. After Feng is summoned by Ichico to join the quest, Language proceeds to absorb all the languages available to her, thus entering Phase 3 and summons, with the new rules added, a copy of Sun and a copy of Luna. Despite the advantage, Ichico and Feng manage to turn the tables by sacrificing themselves and allowing Nico to awaken Unforgettable.
Language is dealt the final blow.
Although Language tries to kill her opponents with a supernova explosion, Nico, Ichico and Feng still manage to defeat her, neutralizing her image of Sun before it can explode. Weakened but satisfied, since she was finally able to play with Nico after 4.6 billion years, Language finally decides to give up, using the word "Marriage" (結婚,Kekkon?) and losing at its own game; Language then disappears, but gives Nico and Ichico two wedding rings.
Abilities[]
Language Absorption: While in Phase 2, Language is able to remove people's ability to use language for half a day, and can do so for longer in Phase 3.[4] Language can magnify this ability to affect the entire world, potentially causing the collapse of civilization.[5] This can affect specific targets, leaving others still able to speak. So far this only affects spoken language: Internal thoughts, screams[6] and Apocalypse's telepathy between Fuuko and the Superior Rules are unaffected.[7]
Word Manifest:
During Phase 3, Language is able to replicate Sun and Luna
Language is able to create physical manifestations of any words. First shown when she shot an arrow shaped projectile from her book.[8] During her battle against Nico, Ichico and Feng, she was able to create a variety of objects and creatures as long as she could imagine them. When in her Phase 3, she is even able to replicate the images of the gods Sun and Luna, albeit with difficulty.
Deadly RuleShiritori (尻取,Shiritori? "taking the rear"): For her quest, Language forces her enemies to play the Shiritori game; as in the normal game, players will take turns saying a word that begins with the last syllable of the previous word. As in normal Shiritori, the same word cannot be used twice and the player who uses a Japanese word ending with the Japanese syllable "N" (ん) loses. The objective of the game is to kill the opponent by launching attacks with manifestations derived from the words played. To challenge her opponents, Language modified the game using all 7,000 languages in the current loop, adding a new language at each turn. Furthermore, any word will physically manifest itself as the speaker imagines it, and if a word is to persist through subsequent turns one must imagine this happening. According to her, imagination is important because if you can imagine it, you can even destroy something that only Unbreakable could or even create imaginary creatures like dragons. When Language reaches Phase 3, the number of words that can be used in a turn increases to two, allowing Language and her opponents to launch two attacks per turn.
