—Spring speaking to himself, Chapter 70 |
Spring (スプリング Supuringu?) was a Concept-Type UMA that embodies the season of Spring. It is the main antagonist of the titular Spring Arc.
Appearance[]
Spring appears to be a large and muscular man with greyish-white skin, long light pink hair, pupiless black eyes and a oni-like face with fangs and thick horns on its forehead. He wears simple black pants tied with a red and white rope paired with a geta, both which were made and gifted to him by Tesshu Isshin, as well a pair of sandals. He is seen carrying a paper parasol and a wooden box on his back.
Personality[]
Spring is very confident in its abilities; declaring himself to be lucky and that "nothing will beat Spring".[1]
In truth, he is actually a very gentle being, not wishing to harm humans but in fact play with them, despite God's orders and cries when reminded of Tesshu Isshin, his friend to where he declares he won't hurt any more humans.
Plot[]
Spring, despite being an UMA, had an unusual fascination with humans and wanted to befriend them instead of harm them. However, he was derided as a demon for his ability to summon cherry blossoms due to cherry blossoms being seen as a symbol of misfortune. Coming to a realization that humans bonded with playing, he traveled around Japan, collecting toys to play with humans. By the time he had completed his collection, Spring had already achieved Phase 2 and people feared him even more. As the UMA chose to isolate himself from society, he met Tesshu Isshin. He would eventually becomes friends with him, playing games and teaching him how to write. Tesshu would go into battle to overthrow the Tobaku in a bloodless siege with his Unbreakable, so that the cherry blossoms could become beloved instead of hated. However, God soon forced another Phase onto the UMA, causing him to challenge people to bets and claim the lives of those who lost, only being freed from the state by Tesshu, who was badly wounded in the process. Tesshu however refused to kill Spring despite the latter's insistence, stating his love for the season and instead challenged him to a game with the loser dying. Spring won, (though suspects that Tesshu lost on purpose) and thus, honored his friend's request and lived until people like Isshin "act in earnest and play with [him]."
Unbelievable Arc[]
Spring is one of the Four Season UMAs, along with Winter, Summer and Autumn, who are the targets of Apocalypse's latest quest.
Spring Arc[]
Due to Kofusai, Fuuko's Unluck makes her the perfect candidate to neutralize Spring. Spring meanwhile had made territory in Tokyo at the top of Tokyo Tower, with the UMA having only stood there and drank alcohol the whole time.
When Fuuko reaches the top of the tower, Spring attempts to scare her off by showing her a list of human lives he took that challenged him in the past. Fuuko isn't deterred and instead talks to Spring about loving the season of the spring. However, the UMA suddenly starts writhing in pain and briefly tries to warn Fuuko to run before going into Phase 3, who challenges Fuuko to a three round game with the winner claiming the loser's life. Betting the lives of the humans he has in the trees against all of the Union's workforce, Spring wins the first match thanks to the current Isshin pulling herself out to protect Fuuko from danger. However, Fuuko's bad luck begins to affect Spring during the second round, and at the end of the round he breaks down in tears when reminded of Tesshu, crying to God that he doesn't want to hurt the humans, allowing Fuuko to win.
God then forces a complete Phase 3 on Spring just as the third round starts, with the berserk UMA protected by a interference negation field as he attempts to turn the world into cherry blossoms. The Union and Under are forced to fight together to bypass the negation's effects and free Spring from its berserk form, with Fuuko pulling him out to play the final match. With one last drink to Spring, Fuuko wins the last round thanks to Unluck. Fading away, Isshin reveals her full name as Haruka Yamaoka, showing that her family bears no malice to the UMA that killed their ancestor. Content, Spring passes away peacefully after giving one last haiku.
Abilities[]
Cherry Blossom Transmutation: Spring has the power to turn humans into cherry blossom trees. This happens when a human touches a cherry blossom petal, or stays in his territory for 30 minutes. After reaching Stage 3, his ability expands to turn anything into cherry blossom trees.
Outsider's interference negation: When Spring starts a game against an opponent, he creates a space around himself and his opponent that negates any outside intervention. Any attack or outside intervention will be blocked or negated, with the person who made it instantly turning into a cherry blossom tree. Since attacks are only negated if aimed directly at him, attacks aimed at another target do not trigger the negation and can take effect.
Equipment[]
Kofusai: Spring uses an artifact resembling a pair of dice and a cup. By rolling the dice and predicting whether the outcome is even or odd, the user can steal away what the target cherishes the most. Spring uses this ability to disable the nuke launched at him by Creed.
Enoh Jusshu: With the help of this artifact, Spring is able to turn people into spinning tops.
